Block party winners announced

The Neighborhood Block Beautification Contest has concluded and congratulations are in order to the winning blocks.

The 500 block of Walnut won first place, receiving $25 in Peabody Bucks per household and an invitation to block appreciation barbecue.

The 600 block of Chestnut placed second, earning $10 in Peabody Bucks per household and an invitation to barbecue.

The 700 block of Maple came in third, receiving an invitation to the barbecue.

Every block in Peabody was eligible to win. A "block" consisted of both sides of one block street. Three anonymous judges drove around the community during July and August ranking each neighborhood on the following criteria.

1. Grass mowed, trimmed, clean and neat appearance to the property.

2. Bushes, trees trimmed.

3. No appliances, junk, debris on the property.

4. Clean curbs and gutters.

5. No nuisance conditions on the property.

6. OR — most improved in all of the above categories.

A block appreciation barbecue will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday for the first, second, and third place blocks. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served.

The contest was sponsored in part by Peabody Economic Development committee, the City of Peabody, Peabody State Bank, Legacy Park, Sharon's Korner Kitchen, Peabody Market, Peabody Sausage House, and Peabody Main Street Association.
