Bertha Snare
Bertha Irma (Lee) McNinch Senter Snare was born Aug. 10, 1914, to George Bitler and Clara May (Rogers) McNinch on the family farm in Trego County, four miles north and three-fourth mile west of Arnold.
She died April 3, 2008, at the Good Shepherd Home, Torrance, Calif.
Bertha graduated from Arnold High School in 1932. She later moved to Kansas City and entered nurses' training. She graduated from St. Luke's Nursing School in 1940, as a registered nurse. She later worked at Torrance Memorial Hospital.
On Nov. 4, 1941, Bertha married Jack Raymond Senter. They moved to Redondo Beach, Calif., in 1947, where she lived most of her remaining years.
To this union, three children were born, Ruth Ann, David Lee, and Esther Louise.
Her husband died in 1975.
Bertha married Wilbur Snare on Jan. 24, 1981, and was widowed in 1994.
From 2001 until her death, she lived in Torrance with her daughter and son-in-law, Esther and Phil Dorland.
Bertha loved to quilt. She left a legacy of hand-quilted quilts to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She also loved to cook and won a Betty Crocker Chiffon Cake Award in 1949. One of her specialties was lemon meringue pie. She loved to garden, raising vegetables and roses.
Bertha was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Jack Senter and Wilbur Snare; two brothers, Harold and Harlan; and sister, Mary Kaler.
Survivors include her three children, Ruth Ann Senter of Ypsilanti, Mich., David Lee Senter and wife, Linda of Pendleton, Ore., and Esther Louise Dorland and husband, Phil of Torrance, Calif.; stepdaughter, Cathy of Redondo Beach, Calif.; sister, Bessie Michaelis of Peabody; three grandchildren, Cindy and husband Douglas, Greg and wife Bettina, and Rebekah and husband Timothy; eight great-grandchildren, Bridgette, Emily, Jenna Sue, Garret, Jack, Gabriel, Andrew, and Erin; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She will be missed by her family and friends.
A memorial service was held April 10 at Rice Chapel with the Rev. Mark Rohrbaugh as the officiant with interment at Pacific Crest Cemetery, Redondo, Beach, Calif., beside her husband, Jack.
Pallbearers included her son, David Senter, son-in-law, Phil Dorland, grandson-in-law, Douglas Triebelhorn, nephew, George McNinch, and nephew-in-law, Roy Thornburg.
