Berean boys defeat PBHS in overtime

Peabody-Burns High School boys' basketball squad had its first loss of the season, 67-59, during an overtime contest Dec. 21 against the Berean Academy Warriors.
With the loss, the PBHS Warriors are now 5-1. They will resume play Tuesday night.
The PBHS Warriors took a five point lead, 7-2, midway through the first quarter. Berean came back to within two at the end of the period to lead 11-9. Many whistles slowed momentum in the period. Derek Benson and Derrick Simmonds paced the team with four points each. Christian Bengtsson had two, and Isaac Good added a free throw.
Fouls for both teams began to mount in the second quarter with continued whistles. The teams were even at 16 before Berean took a 10-point lead late in the quarter, 28-18. Brandon Crabtree put in two, and Brian Baker netted a trey to cut the halftime gap to five, 28-23. Bengtsson and Good each had a basket, and Simmonds added three free throws in the second quarter.
PBHS narrowed the gap in the third, pulling within three points, but the Berean squad maintained the lead at the buzzer, 46-39. Nathan Hittle led the team with eight. Good had four. Jason Carroll and Crabtree each had a basket.
Fouls were a problem for the team in the second half, but PBHS stayed close with new faces on the court. Trevor Hamm hit two free throws to bring the PBHS squad to within one, 54-53, with just over a minute to play. Hittle hit the second of two big threes in the period to put the PBHS team up by two, 56-54. Berean answered with two points to make the contest even with 39 seconds to play. Neither team could connect before the end of the game, and the contest went into overtime.
Berean took a quick lead in overtime, leading by eight halfway through the four-minute period. PBHS reserve players entered the game at the two-minute mark to finish the contest. PBHS pulled to within five, but Berean took the win down the stretch, 67-59.
