Benefit auction raises $9,000 years ago

Peabody Main Street hosted another successful benefit auction Saturday night, raising $9,000 to fund projects in the community during the coming year.

Main Street manager Joanna Brazil said the board was pleased with the turn- out and the money raised.

"It definitely was a success," Brazil said. "This was my first benefit auction, but the people who have worked on them before say that we had the biggest crowd ever."

More than 100 attended the auction and steak feed. A dessert auction of 10 pies and cakes from some of Peabody's best cooks saw prices as high as $105 for one dessert.

The auction of Peabody memorabilia and originals included about 75 items. Old yearbooks, bricks from the razed high school building, reprints of early downtown photos, hand-crafted wood items, quilted and crocheted pieces, and old post cards and advertising were sold.

The funds raised by Main Street will help pay for projects like a new brochure, future newsletters, community events, promoting the community in state and regional publications, and other projects to help recruit businesses and new families.

"We appreciate everyone who participated, not just in the auction and steak feed, but in the planning and promoting. And most especially the people who donated the merchandise and those who cheerfully bid high prices to buy it," said Brazil. "Peabody is an amazing community!"
