to move to

run-off for governor

A rather uneventful primary election Aug. 1 has become interesting with a "too close to call" race between Democratic candidates Robert Beattie of Wichita and David Haley of Kansas City, both Secretary of State hopefuls.

The outcome will not be known by state officials until the official canvassing is completed at the end of August.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Jim Barnett of Emporia was the forerunner with more than 70,000 votes or 36 percent overall. He and Lieutenant Governor running mate Susan Wagle of Wichita will square off with Democratic Governor Kathleen Sebelius and Lieutenant Governor running mate Mark Parkinson of Olathe.

Barnett currently is the state senator of District 17 which includes most of Marion County.

All primary winners will face-off with their opponents at the general election on Nov. 7.
