Back on the map
If you ever have traveled through our great state you may have used the Kansas Getaway Guide to plan your trip. This tourism magazine highlights attractions throughout the state and is distributed in all participating communities regardless of size.
This year the Kansas Department of Commerce has decided to upgrade the guide and its website. The magazine not only has a new format but also a new distribution cycle. The Kansas Getaway Guide now will be published and distributed on a biannual basis. Communities now must pay to be listed in the magazine publication which also allows them to be listed on the website (www.travelks.com).
In the past, Peabody has been highlighted in the guide. Our community previously showcased all Peabody has to offer: attractions, dining, and shopping options.
In the 2006 edition Peabody was not listed. This means travelers, potential future residents, and the rest of the state of Kansas may not be aware of what Peabody has to offer.
If the listing fee isn't paid, the Kansas Department of Commerce is unable to list a town in the magazine, on the website, or even on the statewide map located in the front cover of the magazine. So in 2006, since no listing fee was paid, Peabody wasn't listed under possible destinations and was completely deleted off of the map!
Recently the Kansas Department of Commerce has contacted cities about the 2007-2008 issue. Thanks to the support of our local businesses, Peabody will once again be showcased in the Kansas Getaway Guide, on the website, and listed on the map. These businesses, even some who don't directly serve the tourism industry, opted to pay for advertising in order to showcase Peabody and what our town has to offer.
The variety of businesses who chose to participate in the guide will allow travelers to see that Peabody can accommodate a variety of needs. These participants understand that it takes the cooperation of the business community to ensure that Peabody has the opportunity share its small town charm with the entire state.
I would like to thank the following businesses for putting Peabody back on the map: The Coneburg Inn, Jackrabbit Hollow, Jones Sheep Farm Bed and Breakfast, Mayesville Mercantile and Antiques, Peabody Historical Complex, Peabody Market, Peabody Sausage House, and Sharon's Korner Kitchen. Thank you! The new 2007-2008 edition will be available early in 2007 or you can visit www.travelks.com for more information or to help plan your next Kansas Getaway.
