Annual CROP canvass marks 60th year of fund-raising, grain donations years ago

The annual Marion County CROP canvass will begin with a kickoff meeting at 7:30 p.m. June 13 at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church, Goessel.

The rally will feature the Rev. Dr. Joe Hendrixson of Topeka, director of Great Plains office of CROP/Church World Service.

The program, "A Tradition of Help, A Legacy of Hope," will focus on this year's 60th anniversary of CROP.

The canvass, held each year, raises money to confront hunger around the world and in Marion County. In 2005, Marion County raised more than $12,000 in cash and grain donations.

The canvass committee has set a 2006 goal of $9,500 cash. In addition, the committee has a goal of 1,000 bushels of grain — wheat, corn, milo, beans, etc.

Congregations will observe CROP Sunday June 26.
