Anna Lachenmaier
Anna Margaret Lachenmaier, 93, died July 4, 2002, at Presbyterian Manor, Lawrence. She was born April 16, 1909 in Nuckolls County, near Red Cloud, Neb., to Theron Floyd and Alice McClain Child. Through her mother, she was a direct descendant of the Mayflower.
Her father was a Wesleyan minister and her mother served as a Lassie for the Salvation Army in five states and Indian Territory before marrying.
Anna and her two brothers grew up living in numerous parsonages across north central Kansas.
She graduated from Miltonvale Wesleyan College at Miltonvale in 1928. She taught at country schools in Cloud County until she married W.E. "Smoke" Lachenmaier on Sept. 2, 1932.
Her husband was an equipment operator for Campbell and Lachenmaier Road Constructions Company. Their union was blessed with a daughter, Joyce Arlene.
In 1943 they left the road construction business and settled down at Peabody. Due to a teacher shortage during World War II, she resumed country school teaching and taught at Pleasant Valley School southeast of Peabody. Their daughter Joyce, attended Peabody schools.
She was preceded in death by her only child, Joyce Arlene Buller, in 1971, her younger brother Cecil Child in 1987, her older brother Paul Child in 1989, and her husband "Smoke" in 1996 after 64 years of marriage.
She is survived by son-in-law Wesley Buller of Lawrence; granddaughter Sandra White of Topeka and her children Shawna, Shannon, Charles, Caralee, and Jessica; granddaughter Debbie Munoz of Topeka and grandson Gregory Buller of Lawrence; nephews and nieces.
Services were held Monday at Baker Funeral Home in Peabody with burial at Prairie Lawn Cemetery. Pastor Jim Pohlman officiated.
