And what are you doing on Saturday?

We have big doings in Peabody this weekend. The final woman's fair, "Pansies, Petticoats, and Petit Fours" on Saturday will feature Civil War era music, fashions, and customs at St. Paul Lutheran Church. It will organized by the Victorian Revival Society. A teddy bear tea for children will be held at Jackrabbit Hollow, followed by a tea-tasting event for adults.

On Friday and Saturday evenings the Peabody Historical Society will offer one of its famous trips back in time. Members will present vignettes of memories from an era when "going to town" on Saturday night was the big event of the week.

All the pertinent details about times and places are listed elsewhere in this newspaper. You should take note and attend a couple of these programs. For Peabody young people, you will get an idea of what life was really like before television and computers. Older folks will get a kick out of a trip down memory lane (not that I think you remember the Civil War, but I bet some of you can remember your own grandparents reminiscing about it.) Anyway, go . . . no matter what your age, you will have some fun and learn a little history to boot.

And here's a thought: those of you whose teaching covers historic topics might offer extra credit to a student who attends. You might even consider going to one of the events yourself. It would be refreshing to have district students and staff downtown for some purpose other than hanging posters or requesting donations from merchants. Just a thought.
