And the cheesecake brought $105 years ago

Peabody Main Street held its not-necessarily-annual benefit auction Saturday night and the community rallied to its support once again.

More than 100 people came out for the auction and the steak dinner that preceded it. The "to-die-for-dessert" auction alone raised more than $500, and we have it on good authority that the cooks didn't insert a single calorie in their creations.

The sale of Peabody memorabilia and Peabody originals (one of a kind items by some of our most creative residents) netted just under $7,000.

Many bidders rounded their checks off (bless you) and there will be matching dollars from the Boeing Good Neighbor Fund for some current and former Boeing employees who were in on the buying.

The grand total for the evening, after expenses, will be close to $9,000! Give yourselves a hand. You did a good job supporting the community once again. I am always surprised that this event does so well every single time. But I guess I shouldn't be. You are a generous bunch.

On a similar note, I heard that the FFA work auction Thursday night was also a huge success. Eighteen FFA members and their sponsor Sonya Roberts raised more than $2,000 for the local chapter. District parents and patrons showed their support for good kids in a good program. Congratulations, FFA members.

Those two totals are a pretty tidy sum for a single week of charitable giving. Not too shabby for a 2A school district and a little town of 1400. Way to go!
