And more good press

I hope that all five of you regular readers have been hanging in there with me as I stumble through this business of writing an opinion column. My goodness, I have opinions about so many topics! There just don't seem to be enough weeks to share everything I have to say. I have found that I need to touch on the pertinent topics first and then fill in later with harangues that fit in any old time.

I think we will be harangue-less this week. Sorry.

So . . . before we go much farther, I want to congratulate the Mills family at Florence for popping up in the number two spot of a KANSAS! magazine feature called "15 things we love about Kansas." Well, actually the Mills family themselves are not the second of 15 things to love about our state; their store, Doyle Creek Mercantile is what made the list.

And good for them!

Judy Mills and daughter Sara Neal have worked hard to create a destination business in downtown Florence that serves not only that community, but the whole county and a good portion of the Flint Hills region as well. The store carries just about everything one could want in the "general mercantile" line. You need to make a trip to Florence and check it out for yourselves. I will bet you find two or three or nine things you need for your home or a gift or just for fun.

I am not going to tell you what a "general mercantile" line of goods might be. That will be a surprise for when you get inside the store and see what they carry. I have shopped there for a couple of years and I can promise that you won't be disappointed. Give them a whirl.

When businesses in our area get good press, it is a fine thing for all of us. Perhaps business owners in Walton, Peabody, Burns, and Marion ought to gussy things up a bit. Make sure your windows are washed and the dead flies are swept from the displays.

Are your windows and doors full of faded posters for garage sales and lost pets? Get rid of them. Do you allow the public access to your rest rooms? Make sure the "ick" factor is not an issue. Are you serving food? See to it that your cooks and wait staff aren't wearing T-shirts with the special-of-the-day from two weeks ago still on them.

You know, when you open your doors tomorrow, make sure everything is as fresh and welcoming as the merchandise KANSAS! magazine says is available in Doyle Creek Mercantile. Folks will be coming to Marion County to see the second best of 15 things that are loved about this state. If your business is along the way, you might just hear the cash register ring!

If you are ready.
