Alum remembers growing up in Peabody

To the Editor:

Although we've been gone from Peabody for a long time, my wife (Sharon Bartel) and I, who both graduated in 1961, still enjoy reading your newspaper.

While many of the names are no longer recognizable, the "feel" of the community is still gloriously present — or "The Peabody Way" as mentioned in the article by Leslie LaFoy in the May 17 edition.

When I turned to the page showing the seniors of the Class of 2007, I wondered how many, if any, of them truly understand the "upside" of having gone to high school in this community?

Although Sharon and I have moved frequently since leaving Peabody, we remember fondly the environment and the people/values that made it a great place to be.

I still remember the night of our commencement. I drove out of town to my farm home near Elbing, knowing a chapter of my life was now closed that I would forever remember with fond memories . . . and so it has been.

In the years that have passed, we have lived and traveled many places (just returning earlier this month from visiting my 100th country). Still, whenever in Kansas, I manage to find a reason to at least drive down Peabody's Main Street and passed the high school.

PRECIOUS MEMORIES!
