Peabody-Burns superintendent Tom Alstrom has announced that he will be leaving the district at the end of this school year to take the superintendent position at Cheney.

"This was a tough decision," Alstrom said Monday afternoon. "We've been here eight years and felt embedded in the community.

"It'll be tough to leave."

The Peabody-Burns school board had offered Alstrom a one-year extension to his contract at their January meeting. A unanimous vote approved an extension until the end of the 2007-08 school year. Salary determination was planned for later in the spring.

Cheney is a 3A school district west of Wichita.

"We've enjoyed our years here," Alstrom said. "But they (Cheney) made a good offer. We thought about it long and hard, it wasn't an easy choice, but I think in the end it is a good career move."

School board members met Monday evening at 5 p.m. with a representative of Kansas Association of School Boards to discuss the next step for USD 398 in its search for a new superintendent.

Dr. Max Heim, a field service specialist of KASB, will assist with superintendent's search.

The board approved an agreement to use KASB for application services and superintendent search.

Alstrom's resignation was accepted by the board, 7-0, to be effective June 3.
