Alice Mae Litton
Alice Mae (Blackmur) Litton, 102, died March 26, 2002, in Peabody. Born Oct. 23, 1899, on the family's farm nine miles northwest of Peabody, she was the daughter of Alfred and Edna (Yeck) Blackmur.
She attended Ridge School until eighth grade when she began attending school in Peabody, graduating in 1917 from Peabody High School. She taught school for one term, then attended Wichita Business College. She worked for many years at the former Peabody Equity Exchange.
On March 20, 1920, she married Walter Litton and they moved to the farm just south of Peabody. She lived there for 67 years before moving to Peabody Community Living Center in 1987.
Alice was a member of the First Baptist Church in Peabody where she taught a women's Sunday school class for more than 40 years. She remained active in the church until her health forced her to stop. For awhile, she even had a Sunday school class at PCLC.
Following her husband's death in 1956, she spent the next 31 years alone on the farm.
The couple had two daughters. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, her brother George, and her sister, Ethel Manahan.
Survivors include both daughters, Rosemary Litton of Newton and Helen Kliewer and husband Olin of Pawhuska., Okla., several cousins, and a host of friends.
Memorial services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Baker Funeral Home in Peabody, with the Rev. Roger Charles officiating. Burial was in Prairie Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in her name with the First Baptist Church, Peabody.
