Accidents

The following accidents were reported to Marion County law enforcement agencies:

Frankie L. Cook, 38, 721 Main, Florence, was traveling west on U.S.-56, east of Remington, at 1:40 p.m. May 3, in a 1997 Ford Escort when a deer came from a south ditch. The driver was unable to avoid hitting the deer. Passengers in the vehicle were Robert C. Connor, 37, 1305 E. Main and Bill J. Bradford, 36, 168 Eastmoor Drive, both of Marion. Marion County Sheriff Sergeant Jeff Soyez reported there were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damages.

Preston Tyler Neufeld, 24, 101 S. Birch, Hillsboro, was driving a 1999 Dodge Dakota pickup at 8:45 p.m. May 6, northbound on Kanza, north of 270th, when a deer came from an east ditch. The driver was unable to avoid the deer. The truck was registered to Raymond Neufeld of Hesston. Sgt. Soyez reported there were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damages.

Casey G. Nelson, 18, 715 S. Freeborn, Marion, was eastbound on 300th, west of Remington, at 10 p.m. May 9, when a deer came out of a north ditch. Nelson was driving a 2001 Ford F-250 pickup, registered to Diane Sams, of the same address, and was unable to avoid hitting the deer. Brad Klenda, 16, 321 W. Santa Fe, Marion, was a passenger. There were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damages, reported Sgt. Soyez.

Kinglsey I. Opara, 24, Wichita, was traveling north on Sunflower, north of 160th, at 9:34 a.m. May 31, when a large bird hit the passenger side window. The driver swerved, lost control of the 1995 Mercury Marquee, and landed in an east ditch. The vehicle was registered to Godwin Opara of the same address. There were no injuries and damages were less than $1,000, reported Sgt. Soyez.

Mervin L. Deines, 70, 2029 350th, Ramona, was eastbound at 1 p.m. May 31, in a 2005 Ford Lariat pickup on 350th, west of Vista, when a 2000 Chrysler Town and Country van driven by Angela Kay Basore, 33, Burdick, pulled from a drive in front of the Deines vehicle. Deines tried to avoid the van but made contact. Passengers in the Deines vehicle were Terry L. Deines, 40, and Dylan M. Deines, 7, both of 2023 350th, Ramona. Passengers in the Basore vehicle were Matthew L. Basore, 1, Francis R. George, 98, Rebecca A. Basore, 10, and Allison L. Basore, 8, same address as the driver. Sgt. Soyez reported there were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damages.

Stacy M. Hague, 17, 1332 E. 100th, Peabody, was westbound in a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am on 90th, west of Mustang, at 1:20 p.m. June 1, when she lost control after hitting a furrow in the middle of the road made by a county motor grader operator. The vehicle rolled in a north ditch. The driver was transported to Newton Medical Center by Robert Hague, of the same address. The vehicle was registered in Robert Hague's name. The accident was investigated by Sgt. Soyez and reported there was more than $1,000 in damages.

James R. Hett, 40, 129 S. Freeborn, Marion, was eastbound on U.S.-56, east of Remington, at 11:10 p.m. June 9, when a deer entered the roadway from a south ditch. The vehicle, a 1999 Dodge Caravan, struck the deer. Valeree Hett, 15, of the same address, was a passenger. Deputy Josh Whitwell reported there were no injuries. There was no damage estimate listed on the report.

Nathan Scott Hall, 25, 303 B Road, Goessel, was traveling south on K-15, north of 140th, at 9:56 p.m. June 11, when his vehicle, a 2005 Toyota Corolla, struck a cow that was standing in the southbound lane. The driver stated he did not see the Holstein calf. Sarah H. Hall, 23, of the same address, was a passenger. There were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damages, reported Sgt. Soyez.

Trenten M. Svitak, 16, Herington, was driving a 1997 Ford Ranger pickup at 10:50 a.m. June 13, and was waiting for a train to pass at a railroad crossing on 340th, west of U.S.-56/77. Svitak backed up and struck a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire driven by Kim M. Shields, 47, 2524 300th, Lincolnville. The pickup was registered to Toni Love of the same address as Svitak. Undersheriff Randal Brazil reported there were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damages.

Timothy S. McGlachlin, 21, Sedgwick, was northbound on U.S.-77 near milepost 308, at 8:15 p.m. June 13, in a 1991 Chevrolet S-10 pickup when a deer came from an east ditch and was struck. There were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damages, reported Deputy Larry Starkey.

Jana R. Blank, 34, Sedgwick, was driving a 2005 Honda Pilot at 12:55 p.m. Thursday westbound on 110th, about one-half mile west of K-15, when she lost control of the vehicle. She entered a north ditch, hit a culvert, and came to rest in a field. Seth Blank, 8, and Avery Blank, 6, of the same address, were passengers. Deputy Jim Philpott reported there were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damages.
