Bad can be good

By NANCY LAMBING

Hillsboro United Methodist Church pastor

Out of the clear blue, a friend made this observation in the week following Easter.

During Holy Week this year I learned that I don't know the difference between a good day and a bad day. We look at Good Friday and consider it a very bad day when actually it is the best day.

My response:

Most scholars agree that "Good Friday" is a corruption in translating "God's Friday."

My friend's comment has been running through my head ever since. I can now think of many times I experienced a day as "bad" only to look back and understand it as "good." I can recall days I woke up grouchy thinking a day would be "bad" only to experience it as "good." I remember times when I faced a day with dread or fear or hesitation only to be blessed with "good."

"Good Friday" is like that. It started out awful, but ended up glorious. But it's only in looking back that we understand it as "good." It's only by faith that we can see it as "good."

The words from my friend are "good" words. They are a good reminder that each day is a gift and that we really don't know the difference between a "good" day and a "bad" day.

What's important is that we live each day as "God's day."
