Wrestlers continue strong season

Hillsboro’s Garrett Helmer (28-4) and Lane Rogers (21-6) continued strong seasons Friday at the Cardinal Classic wrestling tournament in Hoisington.

Helmer won in the 152-pound class while Rogers won in the 182-pound class.

Premier Hillsboro wrestler Tristan Rathbone, who a day earlier broke the school record for pins, placed second in a split decision to Tate Kadel (14-5) of Beloit.

In winning Friday, Helmer earned his 73rd pin, tying Rathbone for the record.

“These two will be battling down the stretch to determine who holds that spot in the record books officially,” coach Scott O’Hare said, “but they will end the season as No. 1 and 2 in that record category.”

Overall, Hillsboro placed sixth and Marion 11th in the 12-team tournament, which aggregated boys’ and girls’ scores, putting teams like Hillsboro and Marion at a disadvantage.

Others placing were:

Council Grove dual

Hillsboro wrestlers Tristan Rathbone (170 pounds), Garrett Helmer (152), Eli Dalke (160), Deon Weeks (220), and Angus Duell (285) all won their matches by falls in a dual wrestling meet Thursday at Council Grove.

Council Grove outscored Hillsboro as a team, 45-30, to win the meet, even though each team won five contested matches.

“It is very hard to win duals when you give up 18 team points in forfeits,” coach Scott O’Hare said.
