Win-of-the-week goes to Peabody-Burns

Staff writer

Peabody-Burns took its turn this week as the county’s football team to secure a win, beating Stafford 64-62 for its first victory on Friday.

Meanwhile, other county teams struggled.

Marion lost its home game to Kingman 49-6, Hillsboro fell 38-36 against Smoky Valley, Goessel was beaten 64-18 by Little River, and Centre lost 56-26 against Solomon.

Peabody-Burns fell behind 14-8 in the first quarter of its game but responded with 26 points in the second quarter. Coming out of halftime down 38-34, Peabody-Burns dominated, outscoring the visitors 24-6 in the third quarter.

Stafford came back with an 18-6 advantage in the fourth quarter but fell just short, and Peabody-Burns took the two-point win for its first victory of the season.

Marion

Marion has been relying on its defense to keep games competitive, allowing 14 points through three quarters in its first two games.

Their opponent Friday, Kingman, scored that many points within the game’s first six minutes.

The Warriors again proved they could get in the backfield, limiting their opponent to several short gains on the ground. Marion’s linebacking core was able to penetrate upfield several times; with Braedon Mercer and Todd Palic each adding tackles for loss.

Much of Kingman’s damage came in the passing game, on both offense and defense. The Eagles completed three passing touchdowns before halftime, and the defense added two interceptions to greatly inhibit Marion’s first-half chances.

Marion showed promise with a touchdown drive to close out the half, which Seth Lanning opened with a 14-yard completion, and added multiple Kingman penalties to help the Warriors’ case.

It looked as though time would run out, with the ball more than 30 yards from the end zone and just nine seconds remaining in the half. Lanning delivered a 30-yard strike to Ian Ingles near the goal line, though, who took it in for a score as time expired.

They went to the locker room down 28-6 after failing to make a two-point conversion.

Marion again made some productive offensive plays in the second half but was unable to put points on the board.

The second half was all Kingman’s. The visitors outscored the Warriors 21-0 in the half to secure a 49-6 win.

Hillsboro

Hillsboro’s biggest problem might be how many points the Trojans give up. They posted more than 35 points in each of their three games, but now have dropped two straight by a combined seven points.

Friday’s home loss against Smoky Valley was a teaser. Despite giving up 24 points in the second quarter, and falling behind 30-16 in the third, Hillsboro mounted a furious 20-point comeback, only to fall just short in the 38-26 loss.

Quarterback Matthew Potucek and the offense continue to prove they are dynamic. Potucek contributed of all five of the team’s touchdowns. He scored running the ball, with one-yard and 50-yard scores, and throwing, with three touchdown passes.

The receiving corps spread the love. Frank Wichert scored on a 30-yard reception, Jaxxon Hanschu had a five-yard reception to the end zone, and Dillon Boldt got in on the action with a 30-yard catch to score.

Goessel

The Bluebirds scored on passing plays in three separate drives Friday night. They could not keep up with Little River, though, as Little River defeated them 64-18.

Goessel trailed 24-6 at the end of the first quarter and 56-12 at halftime.

With 6:07 left in the third quarter, the game ended by way of eight-man football’s 45-point rule.

Caiden Duerksen and Nate Zogleman caught passes from Grant Bryant for touchdowns in the first half, and Duerksen caught another pass for a score in the third quarter, this time from Jacob Wiens.

Centre

Centre’s best game of the season may have been Friday, despite being short-handed with multiple players out for injuries.

The Cougars’ opponent put up 56 points, identical to the number scored in Centre’s first game. Centre’s scoring, however, more than doubled from the first game, as the team put up 26 points.
