Wichita woman dies in head-on crash

A Wichita woman died at the scene June 13 when she drove her pickup into the path of an oncoming semi on US-50.

According to a report by the Kansas Highway Patrol, Shelbi E. Kind, 22, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet pickup three miles southwest of Florence when she crossed the center line at Turkey Creek Rd. and collided with a 2016 Volvo semi driven by Daniel I. Coyle, 56, Hillsboro, Ohio.

The wreck was reported at 4:44 p.m. With ambulance crews from Marion and Hillsboro transporting patients to out-of-county hospitals and emergency medical technicians from Florence and Peabody on a call to Westview Manor, dispatchers asked Harvey County to send ambulances to the scene.

Peabody firefighters and rescue squad also were dispatched because one accident victim was reported trapped in a vehicle.

A sheriff’s deputy and Peabody police officer was first to arrive at the scene. Another deputy arrived, and the county emergency management director arrived at soon afterward. When the rescue squad arrived, the first deputy announced that the entrapped victim had died.

An off-duty EMT in Florence ambulance arrived 18 minutes after the wreck was reported, and Marion ambulance arrived from Newton four minutes after that.

Florence firefighters went to the US-50/77 roundabout to divert traffic, which was rerouted through Marion for 20 minutes.

State troopers arrived 46 minutes after the accident.

Coyle declined to be taken to a hospital. However, Marion ambulance remained at the scene until 7:06 p.m., and Peabody firefighters until 7:18 p.m.
