Weather defeats tourney play

Mother Nature had the game-winning shot in Saturday’s third-place game at Hillsboro’s Trojan Classic.

The Trojan boys went 1-1, moving to 4-7 on the year, in the first rounds of the tournament.

Hillsboro downed Riley County 63-33 before tumbling 48-33 in Friday’s semifinals against one of Class 3A’s heaviest hitters, the Hesston Swathers.

Inclement weather wiped out Saturday’s contest for third between Hillsboro and Clay Center. The Swathers topped Remington for the classic title.

Overcoming big deficits hasn’t been the Hillsboro boys’ cup of tea this year, and the Swathers’ quick 18-4 start Friday left Hillsboro’s cup overflowing with trouble in the first quarter.

“We missed shots and gave up too many transition baskets,” coach Darrel Knoll said. “The good thing is that we played them fairly even the rest of the game”.

The Swathers barely outscored the Trojans, 30-29, the rest of the way.

Brekyn Ratzlaff scored a team-high 13 points. Tyson Plenert chipped in with 8.

Centre takes 3rd

After defeating Herington 48-27 in the first round of the Cougar Classic, Centre lost 54-23 to Douglass in the semifinals before defeating Rural Vista 41-38 for third place.

It was the third match-up this season with Rural Vista and the first victory. The game was one of the closest of the tournament.

Centre had a slight lead for most of the contest. The team led by three with seconds to go when Rural Vista attempted but missed a three-point shot that would have sent the game to overtime.

Gentri Holub scored 15 points and had five steals. Dane Meier was a perfect 5-of-5 for 10 points, and Santiago Knepp scored nine points.

“I was very pleased with the team’s efforts,” coach Richard Idleman said. “When they got down, they got right back up and kept playing. It was a great win.”

The Cougars fought hard against a bigger 3A Douglass team Friday in the semifinals. Holub scored nine points and had five rebounds, followed by Nick Krch with seven points.

Idleman was proud that his sixth-seeded team defeated the third and fourth seeded teams to finish 2-1 and in third place.

Marion takes 5th

The Warriors opened the Cougar classic as the eighth seed, losing 65-39 to No. 1 seed Elyria.

In s second round Friday, Marion breezed past the No. 5 seed Peabody-Burns for a 54-37 victory.

This left the door open for Warriors to secure fifth place with a hard-fought battle against No. 3 seed Herington, 56-50.

“This weekend was a great opportunity for us to pick up two wins,” coach Donald Raymer said. “Friday, it was a team effort. Saturday, in the 56-50 victory over Herington, we welcomed back Mitch Norris to the lineup, and he made his presence known right away with his leadership and a big three-point basket on his first shot.”

Jack Lanning led scoring Saturday with 23. Cooper Bailey had 8, and Luke Wessel had 6 points, including the go-ahead three-point shot late in the fourth quarter.

“I was very proud of my team to continue to work and improve,” Raymer said.

Peabody postponed

Because of weather, seventh-seed Wakefield was unable to travel Saturday to play fifth seed Peabody-Burns for a seventh-place tourney finish.

Peabody-Burns opened the Cougar Classic with a 52-25 loss to fourth seed Rural Vista.

Friday night, it was Warriors against Warriors with Marion getting the upper hand, 54-37.

At of press time, there was no word on whether Peabody-Burns and Wakefield would make up the postponed game.

Goessel loses

The Goessel boys vaulted into the winner’s side of the bracket at the Burrton Tournament with a 63-48 victory over Fairfield , but the victory put them face-to-face with Little River for the third time this season. Little River won, 70-37.

Little River raced to an 18-0 lead as the Bluebirds were cold from the field. Caleb Burkholder muscled in four points as Goessel trailed 23-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Little River seemed to score at will and led 39-11 at halftime and 60-26 at the end of three quarters. The Bluebirds kept pace with the Redskins in the fourth quarter with Noah Schrag connecting for five points, Burkholder for four, and Jake Wiens adding a basket.

Burkholder hit layups and 15-footers to lead the Bluebirds with 12 points, hitting 100% from the field. Noah Schrag added 11 points.

Games scheduled for Saturday were postponed until Wednesday. Goessel will play for third place against Central Christian at 6 p.m. On Friday, Goessel will travel to Moundridge.
