Icy roads were blamed for numerous crashes in the area Saturday including two in Marion County.

Two Goddard residents died following a collision on an icy bridge, west of Marion.

Diane Brown, 57, was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Impala west on U.S. 56 at 5:18 p.m. when the car slid across the and into the path of an eastbound semitrailer. Kenneth Brown, 61, a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. Diane Brown died at St. Luke Hospital, Marion.

The truck was driven by Johnny Johnson Jr., 37, of Emporia, and was registered to RDG Trucking of Emporia.

A second crash occurred when GaryLynn Ferguson, 27, of Fort Riley, lost control of her 2001 Mercury Mountaineer while driving north on U.S. 77 near 230th Road at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The SUV flipped and landed on its passenger side.

Ferguson was driving with four children from Fort Riley: Gary Ferguson, 4; MiKayla Womacks, 9; Bradon Womacks, 6; and Nathan Womacks, 7. Nathan was the only passenger wearing a seat belt. Gary was unbelted and was ejected from the vehicle. Another unbelted passenger was partially ejected from the vehicle when Marion County Deputy Sherriff Michael Ottensmeier arrived at the scene.

Marion County Emergency Medical Services took the driver and the four passengers to St. Luke Hospital in Marion, arriving at the hospital at 8 p.m.
