Water advisory no big deal for Burns residents

A boil-water advisory issued by Kansas Department of Health and Environment for Burns more than two weeks ago was lifted Thursday. But the advisory wasn’t a big deal for many residents.
“I didn’t boil the water,” Fritzie Hatfield said. “My neighbor is the city maintenance guy, and he kept checking the water and said he thought it was fine.”
Nedy Grimwood said she and her husband boiled water for cooking and drinking during the advisory but began using tap water again after the city said it was OK.
The advisory was issued because of a power outage resulting in a loss of pressure. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.
Hatfield said the outage happened when the city switched its water source from a water tower to a well to work on the tower. Pressure dropped for a short time and came right back, she said.
Former city water supervisor Earl Glenn said rust had been removed from the tower, and it was given a new coat of paint.
