The first day of school for USD 398 students is today.
Peabody Police Chief Bruce Burke reminds Peabody residents to be aware of children walking and riding bikes to school.
“Especially the first several days, the kids are excited to be going back and they are not watching for vehicles,” Burke said. “It is important for drivers to slow down around the children and anticipate the unexpected.”
Burke also reminds drivers that there are several crosswalk areas on well-traveled routes to the schools with reduced speed signs. The blocks adjacent to the school buildings also require drivers to slow down.
“Drivers also should be aware of buses that are loading or unloading students,” he said. “They need to watch for the stop sign arm on the left side driver’s window. If it is extended, they are required by law to stop.”
Burke indicated that he and his officers will be actively patrolling the school zones.
