The Peabody-Burns High School boys’ basketball team is now 5-1 with the latest victory against Wichita Home School.
A 52-42 victory Dec. 22 gave the team a four-game winning streak heading into the second semester.
PBHS took the early lead with two quick baskets from Aaron Topham.
Wichita Home School came back to tie the game at four with five minutes on the clock.
Brian O’Neal and Martin Hofkamp each added a basket in the first quarter but Wichita Home School ended the period on top by six, 14-8.
Sean Jones broke the scoring drought for PBHS with a free throw with 6:25 on the clock in the second quarter.
PBHS trailed throughout the second quarter but steadily chipped away at the Wichita lead.
Simmonds and Topham combined for 13 points but it was Hofkamp who put the Warriors on top by one with a basket with 50 seconds left to play in the half.
The PBHS offense was better in the second with the addition of 16 points. Wichita Home School added nine. The PBHS lead was 24-23 at the half.
PBHS remained in control early in the third quarter but Wichita Home School kept the score close, and the PBHS lead was only four, 36-32, at the end of the period.
Simmonds had four points to lead the quarter scoring. Brian Wingert, Caleb Hilliard, Topham and Hofkamp each added two.
Free-throw shooting was a big factor in the fourth.
Topham had five from the line, O’Neal had four, and Hofkamp had one.
Topham added four from the field and Simmonds added two.
With the addition of 16 in the period, the Warriors took home the 10-point victory.
Topham led the scoring with 22 points.
Simmonds had 12 points and 14 rebounds and Jake Middleton had five rebounds.
