The Peabody-Burns High School boys’ basketball team opened the 2008-09 season Dec. 5 with a 66-45 victory at Chase County.
PBHS trailed the Bulldogs early in the first quarter. The Warriors managed to pull within one at the buzzer, 15-14.
Jacob Simmonds paced the first-quarter scoring with seven points. Brian Wingert, Aaron Topham, and Brian O’Neal each added a basket and Sean Jones added two free throws.
The Warrior offense out-scored the Bulldogs 16-8 in the second quarter. Topham led with six points, Martin Hofkamp got on the board with four, while Wingert, Jones, and Jake Middleton each contributed a basket.
The PBHS defensive pressure held the Bulldogs to eight points in the quarter and the Warrior edge at the half was nine, 31-22.
PBHS added 17 points in the third to increase its lead at the end of the quarter, 48-29.
Topham put in two three-pointers and Middleton added a three and a two-point basket.
Hofkamp came up with four points and O’Neal added two. PBHS defense held the Bulldogs to only seven in the period.
Many Warriors got in on the scoring in the final quarter of the contest.
Middleton and Hofkamp led the fourth with four each.
Simmonds had three points and Jones, Caleb Hilliard, and Joe Zappone each added a basket.
Topham contributed a free throw.
Topham led the scoring with 15 points. Hofkamp was next with 12, and Simmonds led the defense with 16 rebounds.
