Warriors take 3rd at Hesston, compete in 36-hole event

Staff writer

The Warriors took third out of three schools competing in the combined Wheat State League-Heart of the Plains League tournament Monday in Hesston with a team score of 501 strokes.

Goessel hosted the tournament and took first with 427 strokes, followed by Pretty Prairie with 428.

Individually, Jade Corona took 10th out of 25 players after shooting a 117.

“Jade has done really well this year,” Pohlman said. “On average, he is on about 11 strokes better than last year.”

Jacob Matz finished one stroke behind Corona, taking 11th with a 118.

Zach Stephey placed 14th with a 129, Brent Buller came in 20th with a 137.

Marion Invitational

A depleted roster of Warriors competed in the Marion County Invitational golf tournament Friday at golf courses in Marion and Hillsboro.

Golfers played 18 holes at Marion Country Club in the morning, ate lunch, and played another 18 holes in the afternoon at Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course.

The Warriors did not place as a team in the tournament because they did not have enough players to merit a team score.

“We had two guys that were sick and one was on vacation,” coach Jim Pohlman said. “We had three guys start and two guys finish the tournament.”

Pohlman said competition was tough as they were competing against 4A schools.

Individually, Jade Corona finished in 35th out of 49 golfers with a score of 201. He shot a 102 at Marion and a 99 at Hillsboro.

Brent Buller came in 41st with a score of 219. He shot a 112 at Marion and a 107 at Hillsboro.

Jacob Matz shot a 113 at Marion but Pohlman said he had to withdraw from the second half of the tournament because of illness.

Pohlman said Corona will be the only golfer to tee off at regionals Tuesday.
