Warriors split games

The Peabody-Burns High School Warriors basketball team competed Feb. 14 at Little River and returned to the home court Friday for a senior-night contest against Moundridge.

The squad defeated the Redskins, 55-52, but lost to the Wildcats, 71-39. Warriors basketball nears an end with one more regular season contest at Hope and then will move to sub-state play.

Little River 52

Little River offense outscored PBHS, 15-10, in the first quarter. Hunter Pickens led the Warriors’ offense with 5 points. Matt Hiebert added a trey. Seth Topham had a 2-point basket and a free throw. Brody Kyle had 2.

PBHS offense tied up the game in the second quarter. The team took the 9-7 edge over the Redskins and the contest was knotted at 22. Christian Gard led with 5 points. Hiebert and Austin Savage each added 2.

The third quarter advantage went to the Redskins. PBHS trailed by 4, 40-36, at the end of the period. Hiebert paced the team with 9 points. Pickens had 3 and Wesley Shaw added 2.

The Warriors won the battle in the fourth with the addition of 18 points. PBHS defense sent Little River to the free-throw line 10 times but held on for the 55-52 victory. Pickens led the fourth quarter scoring with 10. Topham scored 5, and Hiebert added 4.

Shaw led the team with 11 rebounds. Pickens had 6.

Moundridge 71,
PBHS 39

The Moundridge offense took the lead with the first 8 points in the contest. Hiebert got on the board with a 2 followed by two from the line from Topham. The Wildcats’ offense took a 20-10 advantage at the end of the first period. Shaw hit a trey for the Warriors and Kyle added 2. Pickens had one free throw.

The Wildcats added 18 more in the second. PBHS offense had 4 points from Hiebert and 2 from Pickens. PBHS trailed, 38-16, at the half.

PBHS offense improved in the third with, 15 but Moundridge still had the quarter scoring edge with 18. Pickens led the period with 6. Topham scored 4, and Hiebert added a trey. The Wildcats had the 56-31 advantage after three quarters of play.

Savage scored two treys in the fourth. Topham added a 2. Moundridge had 15 in the quarter. PBHS lost to the Wildcats, 71-39.
