Warriors place fifth at Classic

The Peabody-Burns High School Warriors boys basketball team bounced back in the third round of tournament play at the Marion Classic in Marion to take a third-round win over Eureka and earn the consolation bracket plaque for the three-game competition.

In round one Dec. 7, the PBHS Warriors lost to Marion Warriors, 37-27. A second loss came Thursday in a round-two defeat by Berean Academy, 54-22. On Saturday in round three, however, the victory went to the PBHS squad with a defeat of Eureka, 42-31. The Warriors will play at home before the Christmas break facing Berean Academy on Friday.

Marion

Both offenses had a little trouble in the first quarter, but the Warriors from PBHS took the 1-point edge at the end of one, 8-7. Hunter Pickens scored 4 for PBHS. Brody Kyle and Austin Savage each had a basket.

The Warriors’ offense flat-lined in the second quarter with only one basket from Kyle. Marion added 12 and took a 19-10 advantage at the half.

PBHS scored 9 in the third quarter, but Marion added 10. Matt Hiebert had three free throws, Pickens and Derek Price each had a 2-point basket. Kyle and Seth Topham each added a free throw. The PBHS Warriors trailed, 29-19, at the end of the quarter.

Both offenses added 8 in the final period. Price led with 7 points and Kyle added 1 free throw.

PBHS lost in the first round to host team Marion, 37-27.

Berean Academy

Berean Academy owned the first quarter, 18-2. Joseph Lopez scored the only basket for PBHS.

Both offenses scored 6 in the second, but the slow offense of the PBHS squad from the first quarter made the score 24-8 at the half. Kyle had 4 points in the second quarter and Pickens had a basket.

PBHS again had a 2-point period in the third with the only bucket from Pickens. Berean added 15, and PBHS trailed by 29 points, 39-10, at the end of three.

PBHS offense improved in the fourth with the addition of 12 points. Hiebert and Topham each had a trey. Jacob Gillet, Price and Kyle each had 2-point baskets. Berean defeated PBHS, 54-22.

Eureka

A good first quarter ended with a 9-9 tie in the third-round contest. Price led the Warriors with 4. Pickens and Savage each had 2 and Hiebert added a free throw.

Good defense from the PBHS squad held Eureka to 9 in the second quarter. PBHS offense added 15 and had a 24-18 lead at the half. Pickens led the period with 6 points. Kyle added 4 and Hiebert had 3 free throws. Storm Pickens got on the board with a basket.

The Warriors outscored Eureka, 11-5, in the third to take a 35-23 edge at the end of the period. Kyle had 4 points in the quarter. Hunter Pickens added 3 and Savage and Gillet each contributed 2.

Eureka offense had a 1-point edge in the final period, 8-7, but PBHS earned the win, 43-31. Storm Pickens had 4 in the fourth. Gillet and Price each had 2 points.
