Warriors lose pair to Goessel

Staff writer

Shut out after briefly taking the lead in the second half, the Peabody-Burns boys team fell 40-27 Friday at Goessel while the girls were outmatched 84-13 by the taller, league-leading Bluebirds.

The boys’ game pitted two teams trying to stay out of the Wheat State League cellar.

Goessel jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but Peabody-Burns battled back to trail 12-10 at the end of the first quarter.

A free-throw-filled second quarter, with the Warriors hitting 10 of 16, allowed Peabody-Burns to tie the game at half.

The Warriors snatched the lead on a Caleb VanCuren basket at the start of the third quarter, but that would be the last score for the Warriors.

As foul problems mounted for both teams, Goessel scored 15 unanswered points to win.

Tyler Entz lead Peabody-Burns scorers with 8. VanCuren had 5; Chance Elliot, 4; Jacabo Penalver-Perein, 4; Rocco Weerts, 3; Bryant Young, 2; and Jack Parks 1.

In the girls’ game, Bluebird athleticism took advantage of Warrior turnovers.

When Tori Pickens hit two free-throws in the first quarter, the score was already 13-2. Pickens hit another free-throw in the second period, and Precious Kerr dropped in five points as the Warriors trailed 51-8 at half.

The Bluebirds connected on six three-pointers in the third quarter as Kerr and Pickens totaled 3 points.

Only three Warriors scored: Kerr had 7; Pickens, 4; and Sydney Hodges, 2
