Warriors lose back-and-forth contest

A strong start for the Peabody-Burns High School Warriors basketball team was not enough Friday at White City. The team lost a close game, 33-32.

Up next, the Warriors will compete Friday at Solomon.

Storm Pickens opened with a 2-point basket, and Matt Hiebert scored a trey for the first 5 points of the competition. Jacob Gillet followed with two more baskets and the PBHS squad led, 9-0, with 4 minutes, 30 seconds on the clock. White City got on the board with two free throws, but Hunter Pickens came back to score a 2-point basket to keep the gap at 9, 11-2. The Huskies added two baskets and two free throws with less than 2 minutes to play in the period. Lucas Larsen scored a basket for the PBHS squad. The Warriors were up, 13-9, at the end of the first quarter.

Gillet had the first 2 points in the second quarter but then White City added 6 and cut the PBHS lead to 1, 15-14, with 4 minutes on the clock. Brody Kyle scored a PBHS basket but the Huskies then added a free throw and a basket and the game was tied, 17-17, with 1 minute left in the half. Hunter Pickens gave the Warriors the lead, 19-17, with two free throws, but a Huskies basket and a free throw gave White City the 1-point edge, 20-19, at halftime.

PBHS took the lead briefly in the third with a 2-point basket from Hiebert, but White City came back with the next 6 points. Derek Price had the only other basket in the period. PBHS trailed, 26-24, after three quarters of play.

Hunter Pickens drained a trey to give PBHS the early edge, 27-26, in the fourth quarter. White City tied the game with a free throw and took the lead with a 2-point basket. Hiebert scored a trey and PBHS again had the lead, 30-29. The Huskies added a 2-point basket and regained the lead, 31-30, with 1 minute left in the contest. Storm Pickens added two free throws with 50 seconds in the contest and PBHS again led, 32-31. After a series of timeouts, the final points went to the Huskies with a basket with 5 seconds left in the contest. A final PBHS attempt for the winning basket failed and the Warriors were edged by White City, 33-32.

Hiebert and Storm Pickens each earned 7 rebounds in the contest. Price had 5 and Kyle had 4.
