Led Lions 30-24 early in second quarter

The Peabody-Burns High School Warrior football team suffered a road loss Friday at Lincoln, 82-42. The team returns to its home field Friday for a match-up with Claflin.
The PBHS offense opened at its own 32-yard line. The series included a pass to Brody Kyle, a quarterback keeper by Hunter Pickens, and an option pitch to Austin Savage. The series ended on a fourth-and-3 run by Pickens that was stopped at the Lions’ 36-yard line.
The Lincoln offense opened with an incomplete pass. Xavier Jabary stopped a run on second down. Lucas Larsen downed the receiver on the next play, but Lincoln earned enough for a first-and-10 at the Warrior 31-yard line. Lincoln completed a second-down pass for the score. Another pass play earned two extra points. Lincoln took an 8-0 lead with 9 minutes, 20 second left in the first quarter.
Five plays later, the Lions were on the board again with a passing score. Again the team completed the pass conversion and they extended the lead, 16-0, with 7:38 on the clock.
Savage fielded the next kick-off and set up the Warriors at their own 38-yard line. A Pickens run gained 15 yards and a new set of downs. Another first down came on an option pitch to Savage that moved the team to the Lions’ 16-yard line. The scoring play was set up at the Lincoln 4-yard line with a third-and-goal option pitch from Pickens to Savage that put the Warriors on the board. Pickens added 2 on a run through the middle. PBHS cut the Lions’ lead by 8, 16-8, with 6:49 on the clock in the first.
Defensive stops from Braxton Kyle, Savage, Pickens, Wes Shaw, Brody Kyle and a sack by Shaw stopped the Lions on their next drive. On fourth-and-10 at the Lincoln 12-yard line, the Lions punted.
A first-down Pickens pass fell incomplete. A pitch play to Savage gained 1 yard on second down. An encroachment call on the Lions moved the ball 5 yards. Another incomplete pass set up a fourth-and-4 at the Lincoln 38-yard line. Pickens called a quarterback keeper and ran for the score. The conversion pass to Savage was good. The Warriors tied the ballgame at 16 with 4:31 left in the first quarter.
The Warriors’ defense stopped Lincoln on the next drive. On fourth-and-1, at the Warriors’ 28, the ball was fumbled, and Savage recovered for the Warriors.
A first-down completed pass from Pickens to Braxton Kyle gained 31 yards and took the PBHS team to the Lincoln 16. Pickens scored on a run through the middle on the next play. The conversion failed, but PBHS led, 22-16, with 2:42 left in the first.
Lincoln came right back on the next drive and found a scoring opportunity from their own 33-yard line. The pass play to the left side tied the ballgame at 22. A conversion pass play broke the tie. The Lions led, 24-22, with one minute left in the first period.
The Warriors’ offense set up midfield for the next series. A Lion penalty moved the ball into Lincoln territory. Pickens gained 14 yards on a rush to the right and PBHS offense had first-and-10 at the Lions’ 14. Early in the second quarter, Pickens found the end zone for a score. Savage scored the two-point conversion. PBHS took the lead, 30-24, with 11:52 on the clock in the second period.
Lincoln added two scores late in the second quarter. PBHS offense did not get into the endzone again. Lincoln led, 40-30, at the half.
Lincoln had the first possession after halftime and scored a touchdown. With 9:57 left in the third, the Lions extended their lead, 46-30.
Lincoln scored two more times before PBHS put up another touchdown. Their scoring drive included a Pickens run, a pass from Matt Hiebert to Seth Topham, and a catch by Brody Kyle to set up first-and-goal at the Lions’ 3-yard line. Hiebert connected with Savage in the middle of the defense for the score. The extra point attempt failed. With 1:40 left in the third, the score favored Lincoln, 62-36.
With nine seconds left in the third quarter, the Lions added 8 more points. Lincoln led, 70-36, late in the period.
The Warriors added one more score in the game. Hiebert connected with Topham for a 67-yard score. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful. The score with 11:44 left in the game was Lincoln 70, Peabody-Burns 42.
The Lions found the endzone twice more in the fourth quarter. The final score of the contest gave Lincoln the win, 82-42.
Pickens ran 14 times for 121 yards and three touchdowns. Savage scored two touchdowns, rushing 10 times for 133 yards. Hiebert had three runs for 11 yards.
Hiebert was 9-for-19 for 121 yards and a passing touchdown. Pickens was 5-for-17 for 49 yards. Topham had three receptions for 86 yards and a score. Braxton Kyle caught three for 57 yards and Brody Kyle had three catches for 19 yards. Savage had three receptions for 8 yards.
Savage led the defense with 12.5 tackles. Larsen had 10.
