Warriors fall to Cougars, 50-14

Staff writer

There was no scoreboard for the first half hour of the game Peabody-Burns played Friday at Centre, but that didn’t hinder them.

After Centre scored the first eight points, the Warriors marched down the field in three consecutive first downs, and Jess Philpott ran two yards for a score.

The conversion attempt failed, and Centre led, 8-6.

The Cougars had the momentum in the second quarter, capitalizing on several Warrior turnovers to score four more touchdowns and increase their lead to 36-6 at halftime.

Just when it looked like the game might be cut short because of the 45-point rule and Centre leading 44-6, the Warriors came alive to come back strong in the fourth quarter.

They forced Centre to punt and then controlled the ball for over five minutes. Several Cougar penalties kept the Warrior momentum going, and Ro Weerts ran five yards for a touchdown with 4:49 remaining in the game. After Philpott caught a pass from Weerts for the extra points, the score was 44-14.

Centre went on to score a final touchdown with 49 seconds remaining in the game. The final score was Centre 50, Peabody-Burns, 14.
