Warriors drop Centre tourney openers
Tuesday’s matchups for Peabody-Burns in the Centre invitational tournament weren’t kind, as the girls were overwhelmed by Marion 58-22, and the boys bowed to Rural Vista 59-27.
While Kallie Hutchison showed early signs of life for PBHS, Marion quickly grabbed control, leading 14-4 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was brutal for Peabody-Burns. Working for better shots by passing the ball around backfired against Marion’s quick-handed defenders, leading to too many opportunities for steals and fast break buckets. PBHS scored just one basket while Marion piled up 19 points to lead 33-6 at the half.
Facing an insurmountable deficit, Anna Lubbers wasn’t ready to concede anything. Working from inside and medium range for high percentage shots, Lubbers led a 16-point second half with a game high 10 points. But PBHS had no solution on defense, as Marion continued to roll to a 58-22 win.
For the first quarter of the boys’ game, Peabody-Burns moved the ball with confidence to stay within striking distance, trailing just 15-8 going into the second.
But in a disastrous repeat of the second-quarter scenario of the girls’ game, the boys also scored just one basket, a late-quarter layup by Chance Elliot, as the Heat surged to a 32-10 lead.
The Warriors somewhat regained their balance in the second half, but the damage was done, as Rural Vista relentlessly pulled away to win by 32.
