Peabody-Burns High School Warriors boys basketball earned a home victory Friday, defeating Wakefield, 47-32.
Up next for the squad is a week of competition in the Cougar Classic at Centre.
Matt Hiebert opened the game with a 2-point basket and followed with a free throw. Storm Pickens got on the board with a 2, and PBHS led, 5-0, with 6 minutes, 42 seconds on the clock in the first quarter. The Bombers then went on a 6-point run and took a 6-5 lead at the 4-minute mark. Brody Kyle scored a basket, and PBHS again had a 1-point advantage, 7-6. Wakefield took the lead with a 2, but Kyle again gave the edge back to PBHS, 9-8. Jacob Gillet added 1 from the stripe and made the PBHS lead 2, 10-8. Wakefield tied the game at 10 with 90 seconds left in the quarter. Derek Price put the Warriors on top, 12-10, with 8 seconds in the period.
A Bomber basket opened the second quarter, but PBHS had all of the remaining offense in the half. Gillet led with 4. Austin Savage scored a trey and Price and Kyle each had baskets. The Warriors led, 23-12, at the half.
Wakefield scored the first basket in the second half. Gillet answered with a 2 for PBHS. The Bombers added another 2, but Savage and Pickens combined for 5 points and PBHS led, 31-16, with 15 seconds left in the third quarter. A Bomber basket at the buzzer cut the Warrior advantage by 2, but PBHS led, 31-18, at the end of the period.
PBHS outscored the Bombers by 2, 16-14, in the final period of the contest. Hiebert led the period scoring with 5. Pickens had 4. Hunter Pickens scored 3 and Price and Kyle each added a basket.
The Warriors earned the victory, 47-32.
