Warriors defeat Burrton, lose to Berean

Peabody-Burns High School boys’ basketball claimed a victory over Burrton Dec. 14 at home 49-44, but lost a Friday home match-up against Berean Academy, 58-19. The squad will take a break until 2011 when they will return to action on Jan. 4 against Centre.

Burrton

Matt Hiebert opened the contest with a basket and added a free throw to give the Warriors the 3-0 lead. Storm Pickens and Derek Price each scored a basket and PBHS led, 7-0. Burrton got on the board with a basket and a free throw to cut the Warrior lead, 8-3. Brody Kyle added a free throw but the Chargers added 3 to cut the PBHS lead to a basket, 8-6. Hunter Pickens added two free throws and Storm Pickens scored a 2-point basket for the 12-8 edge. Storm Pickens added 1 more free throw and PBHS led, 13-8, at the end of the first quarter.

PBHS remained in the lead throughout the second period with the addition of 12 points. Price had 5 the quarter. Jacob Gillet added 4 and Hiebert scored a trey. Burrton scored 9. The Warriors led, 25-17, at the half.

Warrior offense added 10 in the third quarter, but Burrton offense exploded with 19 points to take the lead. A 3-point shot at the buzzer behind half court put the Chargers in front of the Warriors by 2, 37-35. Storm Pickens, Gillet, Hiebert, Hunter Pickens and Price all had 2 each in the period.

The contest remained tight in the fourth quarter but Warrior free throws helped the team take the win. Eight of the 14 Warrior points in the final period came from the charity stripe. PBHS earned the win, 49-44. Storm Pickens scored 6 points in the fourth. Hunter Pickens had 4 and Hiebert added 2. Gillet and Price added 1 each.

Scoring: Storm Pickens, 12; Hiebert, 10; Price, 10; Hunter Pickens, 9; Gillet, 7; Kyle, 1.

Berean Academy

Price opened the scoring with a basket three minutes into the contest. Berean tied the score with two free throws. The Berean Warriors then scored 8 before Storm Pickens made a PBHS basket at the buzzer. Berean led, 10-4, at the end of the first quarter.

A 2-point basket was all of the offense from PBHS in the second period. Berean added 8. PBHS trailed, 18-6, at the half.

PBHS added 8 in the third, but Berean came up with 18. The Berean Warriors had the biggest lead of the game, 36-14, at the end of the third. Storm Pickens scored 4 in the period. Hiebert and Kyle each added 2.

Scoring continued from the Berean squad with the addition of 23 points in the final period. Hiebert had a trey in the fourth and Sean Brunner had a 2-point basket.
