The Warriors of both Marion and Peabody-Burns lost their second-round playoff games Friday, ending their seasons as regional runners-up.

Marion

Marion battled hard in Friday’s stormy road playoff game against Wabaunsee, losing 22-14.

“Losing any game is never fun, especially the last game of the season,” coach Shaun Craft said. “It always hurts a little more when you know the players and coaches invested so much into the season and sacrificed so much time.

“I’m proud of how this team battled and competed till the very end of every game this season.”

Trevor Schafers scored Marion’s first touchdown, rushing one yard to get in then following up with a two-point conversion.

Schafers ended this season with 1,062 yards rushing, which very few are able to achieve in a single season.

Jack Lanning found Colby Lollar for a 35-yard touchdown pass and Marion’s second score late in the 4th quarter.

It was the third touchdown of the season for Lollar.

Lanning finished the game with 94 yards passing and 53 yards rushing. For the season, he had 759 passing and 844 rushing yards.

Caleb Darrow had 42 receiving yards Friday. Ian Ingels had 25.

On defense, Schafers lead the way with 13 solo tackles in followed by Lanning with 10. Quade Williams finished with 6, Ingels with 4, and Nathan Hoffner with 3. Brayden Hulett had 2 tackles and snagged an interception to go with them.

Marion Warriors finish the season with a 6-4 record, this year being the first season in 5 years since they last won a playoff game.

“We only lose six seniors (Nathan Hoffner, Ian Ingels, Brayden Hullett, Colby Lollar, Chance Shults, and Quade Williams), but when all your seniors are major contributors it leaves some big shoes to fill next season,” coach Craft said.

“However, we will return a solid group next season and we’ll get back to work here again in a few weeks so we can reach that next level.”

Marion put up 342 points this season while allowing opponents only 204.

Peabody-Burns

Peabody-Burns was unable to get revenge on Tescott for A Week 1 loss, losing Friday’s road playoff game, 40-12.

The Warriors completed 14 of 16 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown. Jefferson Glover was on the receiving end.

Cade Gossen saw the end as well with a rushing touchdown, but ending the game with only 15 yards total. Chris Spencer finished with 38 yards rushing. Colton Gossen had 34 yards rushing.

On defense, both Kael Hutchison and Tanner Parks came up with a fumble recovery. Hutchinson and Cade Gossen lead the defense with 7 tackles a piece. Tanner Parks and Chris Spencer finished with 5 each.

This was Peabody-Burns’ first six-victory season since 2016, its first time to reach the second round of the playoffs since 2005, and its highest scoring season since 2014, with an average of 40 points per game.

Everyone on the Warriors team scored this season in some way or another.

Senior Colton Gossen scored 25 touchdowns, senior Jeff Glover had 11, and Huchison had 10.

Parks had one of the best seasons for his career, completing 66% of his passes for 15 touchdowns against only two interceptions, a quarterback rating of 123.6.

“This year,” coach Kody Tegtmeier said, “was one of my most fun coaching due to the results of this group of boys bonding together and learning to care about each other not just as teammates but also as brothers.

“We have talked about how important that is now and continuing for the rest of their lives. To watch these senior boys take the sophomores, freshman, and German foreign exchange student under their belts was a thing of beauty.”

Peabody-Burns finished the season with a 6-4 record. Five players will not be returning next year because of graduation,

“Looking ahead to next year, Cade Gossen, Chris Spencer, and Andrew Reynolds are looking to build off their successes this season,” Tegtmeier said. “With no juniors on the team, they will be the big dogs next year, so it will be on their shoulders to continue to push this success off onto the younger boys coming into the program.”
