Warrior boys win one, lose another

Peabody-Burns High School boys’ basketball team defeated Burrton Dec. 11, 67-57. The Warriors lost to Berean, 42-35, on Friday. The team will have one more game against Centre before the Christmas break.

Burrton

Both offenses had a good first quarter in the contest. A layup by Braxton Kyle gave the Warriors the edge 15-14 with 1 minute left in the period. Burrton scored a basket with 10 seconds left and PBHS trailed 16-15 at the end of one quarter. Seth Topham led the scoring with 10 points. Kyle and Garret Schroeder added 2 points and Christian Gard recorded a free throw.

In the early minutes of the second, Kyle evened the score with a free throw and Schroeder also added a free throw for the go-ahead point. The Warriors then went on to score 17 more points before the break. PBHS held Burrton to 5. Gard led the offense with 7 points, including a 3-pointer. Kyle had 4 points, Tommy Morris scored 3 points, and Xavier Jabary and Topham each added 2 points. Schroeder had a free throw. PBHS led, 34-21, at halftime.

Both offenses had a good third period but PBHS got the edge with 17 points while the Chargers added 15. Kyle led with 9 points. Gard, Morris, Jabary, and Vince Newman each had 2 points. The Warriors had the lead, 51-36, at the end of the period.

Burrton outscored PBHS in the fourth, 21-16, but the cushion built in the second quarter proved enough for the victory. The Warriors earned the win, 67-57.

Four Warriors were in double figures. Kyle led PBHS with 15 points. Gard scored 14 points, Topham had 12, and Xavier Jabary had 10.

Berean Academy

PBHS earned the 1-point edge 11-10 at the end of a fast first quarter. Topham and Morris each had 4 points. Gard hit a 3-pointer.

Down by three, 18-15, with 2:00 left in the half, PBHS went on a 6-point run. Morris tied the game with a 2-pointer. Schroeder added a basket for the lead and Morris dumped in another jumper for the 22-18 edge at the break. Morris had 9 of the 11 points in the second. Schroeder added 2 points.

PBHS struggled in the third quarter with just 2 points each from Morris and Topham. Berean added 14 points and took the 32-16 lead at the end of three quarters.

Twice in the fourth, the PBHS squad got within 3 points but could not get any closer. Gard added 5 points in the quarter Jabary and Schroeder each had 2 points. PBHS lost 42-35.

Morris was the leading scorer for PBHS with 13 points. Gard was second with 8 points.
