Walk a piece of Santa Fe Trail

Flint Hills Counterpoint will present a Santa Fe Trail walk and storytelling adventure at 9:30 a.m. July 1 at the Schmidt Ranch north of Lehigh.

Steve Schmidt and Doug Sharp will lead participants in a one-mile loop on a portion of the Santa Fe Trail that runs through Schmidt’s property. The hosts will share stories of the trail and point out significant points of interest along the way.

The property is on the National Register of Historic Places and has received Historic Site Certification from the National Park Service.

Registration and directions are available by calling Flint Hills Counterpoint co-executive Susan Mayo at (316) 258-2342.

Schmidt, an amateur historian, knows Santa Fe Trail history.

He was a longtime president of the Cottonwood Crossing Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association and has earned numerous awards for promotion and preservation of the trail over the past 20 years.

Schmidt’s booklet, “Lost Spring, Marion County, Kansas, A Historical Perspective,” is available free at SantaFeTrail.org.

Sharp is president of the Cottonwood Crossing Chapter and is president of Scully Partners LP, Midlands Farm Services Inc., and manages land in the Flint Hills where the Santa Fe Trail traverses near Dunlap in Morris County.
