Volunteers will clean up Peabody's 'front walk'

Members of Partners of Peabody Parks and Peabody Main Street will gather at 9 a.m. April 2 at Santa Fe Park to divide into groups and clean up winter’s leftovers from Walnut Street and the downtown area.

Bottled water and lunch in Santa Fe Park will be provided to clubs or individuals who help.

“We have some upcoming events that bring a lot of visitors to town,” POPPs chairman Tom Schmidt said. “Walnut Street, from Ninth Street south to Santa Fe Park, is like the city’s front walk or front porch. It needs to be inviting.

“It is easier for the street sweeper to clean up the street if we scoop out the gutters before the city guys get started,” he added. “And once it is done, it is easier to keep the street looking good through Memorial Day weekend, July Fourth holiday, farmers market weekends, and the summer concerts in Santa Fe Park.”

Volunteers are asked to bring brooms, tools, gloves, and shovels.

In case of rain, the project will be postponed until April 30. For more information, contact Schmidt at (620) 983-2264 or the city building at (620) 983-2174.
