Staff writer

The Peabody-Burns High School volleyball team competed Sept. 28 at home. The Lady Warriors claimed a win over Solomon 25-14 and 25-18, but lost the second match to Elyria Christian 23-25 and 22-25. The squad will wrap up the season with the “Dig Pink” triangular Tuesday at home.

Solomon

Embry Hodges scored two of the first four PBHS points with a tip and an ace. Michaela Methvin had a kill to take the Lady Warriors to 7-4. PBHS continued to build on their lead with aces from Brandee Burnett, Methvin, and Sarah Hofkamp. Kills were recorded by Paige Lewis, Methvin, and Hodges. The Lady Warriors defeated Solomon, 24-14, in game one.

Both squads were competitive in the first 18 points of game two. Hodges and Methvin had kills and Lewis had an ace but Solomon kept the game tight, playing to a 9-9 tie. A Burnett ace broke the tie and a Methvin kill, ace, and block gave the Lady Warriors the next three points. Rayna Barnes had two kills and two aces in the next five points and PBHS took a big lead, 18-9. In the remaining 7 points, Lewis and Hodges each had two kills and Methvin scored 1. PBHS won game two, 25-18.

Hodges led the team with seven kills. Methvin and Lewis each had six. Barnes had two. Burnett led the team with five aces. Hofkamp had four and Methvin had three. Burnett had 14 digs, Hodges 11, and Lewis eight. Hofkamp had 18 assists in the match.

Elyria Christian

PBHS offense struggled early. A Hodges ace helped the PBHS squad to pull within three, 3-6. A Methvin kill gave the team the next point, but Elyria then built a 5-point lead. A PBHS rally that included kills from Methvin and Burnett and aces from Burnett and Barnes took the Lady Warriors to within 1, 9-10.

A tip from Hofkamp tied the game. Lewis made a kill which tied the game one last time before Elyria went on a scoring run. Methvin, Hodges, and Hofkamp combined for six kills in the last 8 PBHS points, but Elyria took the final 2 points. PBHS lost, 23-25.

A Hodges kill followed by a kill from Methvin opened game two. Elyria then took the next 5 points. Methvin and Hofkamp each scored a point but PBHS trailed, 4-6. Methvin scored an ace to make the gap 5-6 but Elyria then built a 4-point lead. PBHS again chipped away at the lead.

A block by Methvin and Hodges again narrowed the gap to 9-10. A Methvin block and a Hofkamp tip tied the score at 13 but Elyria again rallied to take the lead. Despite kills from Hodges, Methvin, and Lewis, PBHS lost game two, 22-25.

Methvin led with 10 kills. Hodges had four and Hofkamp and Lewis each had two. Burnett had four aces and Methvin and Hodges each had one. Lewis had 12 digs and Burnett and Hodges each had eight. Hofkamp had 16 assists.
