Virginia Shields

Virginia L. Shields, 93, of Lincolnville, died Thursday at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lincolnville. Burial will follow at Lewis Cemetery, Ramona.

A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Herington Chapel. The family will receive friends until 9 p.m. after the service.

She was born Oct. 5, 1921 to Alexander and Leah Ethel (Riffel) Brunner on the family farm near Ramona.

She graduated from Ramona High School in 1939 and was a farm wife and homemaker. She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lincolnville. She had a teaching certificate from Emporia Normal School and taught school in Dickinson and Marion counties for six years.

She married Fred Shields April 23, 1944. He preceded her in death in 2004. A son, Carrol Shields, who died in 2003, and two brothers, Lauren Brunner and Kenneth Brunner, also preceded her.

She is survived by two sons, Glenn Shields of Lost Springs and Kenneth Shields of the home; one sister, Betty Dyck of Minneapolis; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
