Damage from BB guns totals $6,650

Staff writer

Surveillance video from an apartment complex two blocks away has identified two juvenile suspects in a BB shooting spree that caused an estimated $6,650 in damage last week to homes and vehicles in the 200 block of S. Date St. in Hillsboro.

The shootings occurred between 7 p.m. July 9 and 8:25 a.m. July 10, according to offense reports.

Among the items shot were windows on a 1996 Jeep Cherokee, a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe, and a 2016 Harley-Davidson motorcycle along with a storm door and three windows on two different houses.

Victims were identified as Michael E. Mader, 39, and Mathew C. Friesen, 26, who reside in the area, and landlord Alexa J. Rivir, 70, Canton.

Assistant police chief Randy Brazil said he thought the incidents were related to another vandalism about the same time in the 300 block of N. Birch St.

In that incident, the window of a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu owned by Guadalupe J. Sosme was damaged. Damage is estimated at $250.

Brazil said the suspects, both male, are 15 and 17. Police have had issues with the teens before, he said.

Officers are finishing a report for the county attorney for possible charges against the teens, Brazil said.
