Trojans repeat as sub-state champs

Hillsboro was host for a Class 2A sub-state Saturday and, for a second consecutive year, decided to go ahead and win the whole thing.
“I am so proud of these girls! We have young players, kids in new positions, and new faces on the floor this year,” coach Sandy Arnold said.
The Trojans walked past Berean Academy in two matches, 25-10, 25-7. They then lightly jogged past Herington in two matches, 25-8, 25-15.Lastly, they sprinted past Sedgwick in two matches, 25-16, 25-12, to stamp their ticket for the state tourney.
“Today was a complete team effort, with everyone doing their part –all the way to our bench. They are supportive, encouraging, enthusiastic, and are involved in the game,” Arnold said.
Pool play for the state tourney will be Friday in Dodge City. Semifinals and finals will be Saturday.
Goessel
The Goessel volleyball team took care of business in the opening rounds Saturday of a sub-state tournament at Little River.
Goessel defeated Central Plains 25-12, 25-12 and then defeated Sylvan Lucas High School 25-15, 25-16.
The championship game featured Wheat State League teams Goessel and Little River, meeting for the fourth time this season.
The Bluebirds looked sharp for the first part of the first set against the highly ranked Little River team. Goessel led 15-8 only to see Little River rattle off 10 consecutive points. The Redskins won the first set 25-22 and the second set 25-11.
Goessel finished the season with a record of 29-10
Centre
The six seniors on the Centre team – Jenaya Plett, Kenide Steiner, Allie Stuchlik, Addie Makovec, Emilee Remmers, and Sarah David — played their last matches as Centre volleyball players Saturday at a sub-state tournament on their home court.
The Cougars advanced to the semi-finals and won a hard-fought first set, 26-24, against Elyria Christian but seemed to have expended so much energy that they didn’t have much left for the next two sets, which they lost, 25-6 and 25-16.
In the first round, Centre defeated St. Xavier of Junction City in two games, 25-11 and 25-9.
The team finished with a record of 10-20.
“I thought we played very well, with lots of energy,” coach Trevor Siebert said. “We beat a very good Elyria team, and we stayed aggressive.”
He was reluctant to single out individual players.
“I’ve always emphasized that it takes a great team effort,” he said. “The seniors had a great high school career. They went to state as sophomores, and last year played in a sub-state championship game.”
Elyria won the sub-state championship in two games against Central Christian of Hutchinson.
Marion
Chase County eliminated Marion in the first round of a Class 2A sub-state tourney in three hard-fought matches: 19-25, 25-19, 25-22.
As seniors, Gabby Newell, Grace Hett, Haley Kraus, Tess Mendoza and Calleigh Soyez played their last competitive high school volleyball game.
“Grace Hett of course will be missed with her volleyball knowledge, expertise, and wonderful leadership skills,” coach Keri Collett said.
Hett will be a part of the Wichita State volleyball team next year.
“Gabby Newell will also be missed with her fun-loving personality that brought her teammates up and helped them to have fun,” Collett said. “By the end of the season she was one of our most consistent hitters.
“The underclassmen have learned some good things from Haley Kraus on how to be a good friend. She was a great teammate who was always there for her friends.
“I am very proud of each one of these young ladies and I cannot wait to see what they do in the future with their leadership skills.”
Marion finishes the season with a 20-15 record, 6-8 in its district.
Peabody-Burns
The Warriors were unable to compete against Hartford in the first round of a Class 1A Division II sub-state volleyball tourney Saturday at Centre, losing both sets 25-15, 25-9.
Adyson Winter led the team this season in most stats, averaging 1.6 kills per set, 14 total blocks, 25 serving aces, and 86 kills.
Maddy Blythe led the team in digs this season with 136. Francy Reynolds had 70 assists and a .112 hitting percentage.
Peabody-Burns finished the season with a 4-25 record, 1-8 in its district.
