Trip to lake ends in night in jail

Staff writer

A weekend trip to Marion Reservoir with his twin brother and girlfriend ended in an unexpected stay in jail for a Newton man.

Todd P. Singley, 45, Newton, and his twin, Troy, were walking along US-56 Saturday when Hillsboro assistant police chief Randy Brazil pulled over to talk to the men 2½ miles west of Hillsboro.

Brazil had been alerted that the men were walking down the road after a 39-year-old woman who had been to the reservoir with them drove off in Troy Singley’s car, then parked along US-56 near K-168 at Lehigh and called 911.

An argument had happened in the car and hitting had taken place.

But it wasn’t the woman who had notified police first. The first 911 call about the fight came from Todd Singley, sheriff Jeff Soyez said.

“I think he reported that she was going to make accusations against him,” Soyez said. “I think he was trying to get out ahead of it.”

An ambulance took the woman to Hillsboro Community Hospital, where she was treated for a head wound and possibly broken nose.

“They got into an argument going down the road,” Soyez said. “She is saying he punched her in the face.”

When the car stopped west of Hillsboro, Singley tried to pull the woman out, but she refused and drove off instead.

She drove to near Lehigh before calling 911.

Brazil, who said both men were cooperative while he waited for deputy Matt Regier to arrive to arrest Todd Singley, said Troy Singley was allowed to go back to his car and go home.

Todd Singley was jailed at 12:53 a.m. Sunday. He was released 11 hours later on $5,000 surety bond.
