If you are one of the projected 50.9 million Americans to travel at least 50 miles for Thanksgiving, expect your drive to be its busiest in 10 years.

An estimated 1.6 million more people than last year will travel over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, which according to AAA will have the highest traffic volume since 2005.

The region that includes Kansas and six other states will see 90 percent of its 4.1 million Thanksgiving travelers using automobiles.

“Thanksgiving kicks off the start of a busy holiday season, and more Kansans and Americans overall will travel to spend time with friends and family this year,” said Jennifer Haugh, AAA Kansas spokeswoman, in a press release. “A strong economy and labor market are generating rising incomes and higher consumer confidence, fueling a strong year for the travel industry, which will continue into the holiday season.”

The worst time for congestion delays will be early evening as holiday travels mix with work commutes.

At $2.54, Thanksgiving gas prices will be the highest in three years, and daily car rental rates will hit a five-year holiday high, while airfare is at its cheapest in four years. In Kansas, gas prices average $2.42 a gallon, up from $1.91 for Thanksgiving 2016.

Flat tires, lockouts, and battery issues will be the primary causes of over 330,000 projected stranded motorists.
