Teams compete at Marion Relays

Competing at home, Mckinnon Waner won in discus, Sophia Dye in javelin, Chance Shults in pole vault, and Luke Wessel in the 1600-meter run at Thursday’s Marion Relays.

Goessel, Peabody-Burns, and Centre also participated in the April 6 Marion Relays, among 13 other schools.

As a team, Marion took third overall in girls rankings. Goessel was fifth, Centre eighth, and Peabody-Burns 11th.

In boys rankings, Marion finished fourth, Goessel seventh, and Centre 12th. Peabody-Burns did not have enough competitors to be ranked.

“We had 12 athletes set 15 personal records at this meet, so we are pretty happy with the results,” Marion coach Grant Thierolf said. “Gabby Newell had another good run in the 100-meter hurdles, placing second in a pretty competitive race.”

Aimee Funk led Goessel girls with a third place finish in long jump, fourth in triple jump, and sixth place in the 100-meter dash. Logan Bryant captured third in the 300-meter hurdles and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles.

Grant Bryant led Goessel men, placing second in the 110-meter hurdles. Eli Boden secured second in the triple jump.

Centre’s Kaitlynn Bina ran into third place for both the 800- and 1600-meter runs, knocking several seconds off her previous personal record in the 1600.

In her first season of high school track, Olivia Carlson continued to impress in the horizontal jumps, leaping her way into second place for the triple jump.

“Just two days after our first meet of the season in Peabody, I felt our 10 athletes competed well with eight new personal records and two more that were tied,” Centre coach Alan Stahlecker said.

Goessel will be host for a track and field meet this week. Centre and Peabody-Burns are scheduled to attend. Marion will be competing Thursday in Chase County.
