Stephen B. Berry

Stephen B. “Pops” Berry, 66, died Dec. 31 at his home in Walton.

Services were to be at 10 a.m., Wednesday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, Newton. Interment was to be in the Highland Cemetery, rural Newton.

He was born to Paul and Julianna Loomis Eberhard on Dec. 27, 1947, in El Dorado and graduated from Peabody High School. He attended Pratt Junior College on a football scholarship, served in the Navy during the Vietnam War and afterward served in the Navy Reserve.

He married Sondra Briar Fleet on Aug. 3, 1973, in Newton. She died in 2007. A brother, John Berry, also preceded him in death.

He worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad, Hesston Corp., and Case New Holland as an assembler until retirement.

Survivors include daughters Shannan Nickel of Newton, Janet Wentz of Walton, Jill Fleet of Wichita, and Jackie Curtis of Newton; sister Elizabeth Mullholan of Fallbrook, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established with the American Cancer Society and the Wounded Warriors. Contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton KS 67114.
