Splash pad nearing completion

A downtown Hillsboro splash pad, five years in the planning, fundraising, and construction, partially opened Saturday.
Solar shades and benches for the splash pad complex have not arrived, but water sprays were turned on Saturday, city administrator Matt Stiles said.
A formal opening and ribbon cutting will be held after all construction is complete, likely around July 4, Stiles said.
Hillsboro would be a setting in an independent movie. Since filming will take place Sunday in the 100 block of N. Main St., the street will be closed. The project is by producer Emily Railsback.
“Generally, there are no businesses open on Sundays in that block, so we do not anticipate there being much disruption,” Stiles told city council members Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Hillsboro will have two new vacation rental options. City council members Tuesday approved conditional use permits for properties at 208 S. Washington St., owned by Richard and Joni Calam, and 304 S. Main St., owned by Daniel and Christine Smith, to use accessory buildings as bed and breakfast rentals.
Hillsboro also is coming closer to getting a fire truck the city ordered two years ago.
The truck is in Hays, where it is being fitted as a brush truck by Hays Fire and Rescue Co.
