Sparse group listens to congressman

Staff writer

Rep. Tracey Mann, whose congressional district soon won’t include Marion County, which is moving to Rep. Jake LaTurner’s district, was met by only 11 listeners when he spoke last week at the Marion County Park and Lake hall.

He criticized government spending on COVID-19 programs.

“We spend more money of COVID that we spent on World War II,” Mann said. “And we just can’t continue to do that.”

Mann said he advocated for agriculture, supply chain, and the next generation.

Audience members seemed more interested in the effects of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

“I’ve heard that Russia makes a lot of fertilizer,” one listener said. “I’ve also heard that Ukraine produces 16% of the world’s wheat.”

Mann said that most of Ukraine’s wheat was sold south and west of the country and that people in those areas will suffer.

“Do you support giving Ukraine what they need?” the same man asked.

Mann said he supported aiding Ukraine and thought Ukraine could win the war.
