Son of 1978 PHS grad accepts Naval Academy appointment

Hayden Maples of Raleigh, N.C., has accepted an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy to play football. He signed his letter of intent in February.

He will graduate this month from Ravenscroft High School in Raleigh. As senior quarterback, Maples led the school to a 10-3 record and a spot in the NCISAA playoffs in 2008. He passed for 1,174 yards and 15 touchdowns, and rushed for 533 yards.

In addition, Maples played defensive back and returned punts. Maples was a 2008 Big East Independent All-Conference selection and a North Carolina Shrine Bowl participant.

Hayden’s father, Mark Maples, was a member of the 1977 football team that played in the 2A state playoffs in Peabody under Coach Dennis Franchione. Mark is a 1978 graduate of Peabody High School.

Hayden is the grandson of Jeanie Maples and the late Gaylord Maples.
